Institutions remain essential to human flourishing. They are the very means by which communities thrive, individual vocations are fulfilled, and society is changed for the good. We all must learn the wisdom of working effectively within institutions—what Gordon T. Smith calls “Institutional Intelligence.”

Gordon T. Smith is President of Ambrose University. Smith has served as the executive director of reSource Leadership International and as Academic Dean of Regent College, Vancouver, where he continues to teach.

8:45-10:00           Part I:  Governance Matters

When we serve in any governance role or capacity, we are entrusted with a role or responsibility to care for the health and well-being of the organizations – schools – where we serve as trustees.   What does this mean?  What is the character of good governance?   How can we foster effective governance so that these schools flourish?   What is the character of the deliberative process that leads to wise and courageous decisions?

10:15-11:30         Part 2:  Addressing Some Critical Questions

As a rule, there are certain abiding questions that consistently emerge when we talk about governance.  What is mean by “a conflict of interest”?   What are the key working relationships and, most notably, what is the relationship between he chair of the governing board and the chief executive officer?   What does it mean to be accountable and transparent in the quality and character of our work?
