What educators are saying about Residency!

“Everyone was helpful and clearly passionate about the program they were helping to coach. This helped inspire me as a learner as well.”

“It was a wonderful, jam-packed week, and I’m leaving a better teacher!!!”

“I would highly recommend this! Delivers exactly what it promises.”

    What is the Residency?

The SCSBC Residency equips Christian educators with practical professional development, anticipating that these practices will lead to deeper learning opportunities for students. Over one week, teachers will participate in a growth track of their choosing and work with educational coaches and mentors in small ratio cohorts to design learning opportunities catered explicitly to their current practice.

We offer small coach-to-participant ratios to ensure all participants are equipped and confident in introducing or continuing their “deeper learning” practices in their schools. Participants can choose a professional or covenant track depending on their individual or school-based needs. In partnership with academic graduate institutions, participants can use their Residency experience as a scaffold for a Master’s program and receive program credits.

We are committed to working alongside schools, administrators and teachers to ensure that their professional growth fits the needs of the individual and/or the strategic priorities of their school. In partnership with CEBC, we are committed to offering professional development that meets the contractual obligations of Christian educators in British Columbia.

    Learning Tracks

    Professional Learning track

The Residency has partnered with the Institute for Christian Studies (ICS) in Toronto, Ontario, and Dordt University in Sioux Centre, Iowa to offer a professional growth track available to all Residency participants. Should participants want to continue their deeper learning journey, our university partnerships will provide partial graduate credit to pursue a Master of Education degree from Dordt or a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from ICS.

*Note: Any participants that pursue a professional track must qualify for admittance to one of the partner universities.

    Covenant Partnership Track

We are committed to developing long-term professional development plans with schools and educators. Through our partnership with the Society of Christian Schools (SCSBC) we can support school development plans with learning leaders, Residency coaches and on-site professional development days for schools.

A covenant partnership would allow schools consecutive access to our Residency week so we can continue to promote deeper learning training for the school’s educators. If a covenant partnership aligns with your school’s strategic growth plan, or you want to develop a professional learning growth plan for your school, please contact us directly at residency@scsbc.ca.

Find the Course that is Right for You

    Christian Deeper Learning–Worldview

The Christian Deeper Learning–Worldview course is designed for educators looking for strategies to integrate the Christian worldview into their current practice.

    Project-Based Learning

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a pedagogy of teaching and learning in which students engage with complex questions, often collaboratively, and share their learning with an audience.

    Teaching for Transformation

The Teaching for Transformation course provides a curricular framework that provides educators with strategies to develop a project idea using storyline and biblical through-lines.

LoP (Letter of Permission) Support: Teaching Christianly 101

For individuals entering the teaching profession through LoP, subject-restricted, or school and subject-restricted certification, this learning thread is designed as an invitation into the specifics of the profession that can support a successful transition to the classroom in September.

    What to Expect

    Practical
Our biggest aim for your Residency experience is to provide you with something practical! Throughout the week, you will learn protocols and activities to incorporate into your classroom on the first day back and throughout the year. You will culminate your week with a project and/or reflection on your learning and how it can directly impact your teaching and inspire your students.  We are committed to ensuring your experience will be practical and have maximum impact.

    Field Trips
The Residency experience is designed to give you practical training in best practices. Whether through the PBL, TfT, or Christian Worldview course, you will have the opportunity to experience these frameworks firsthand through an explorative field trip that will engage your thinking and planning.

    Authenticity and Inquiry
In order to improve and build upon our practices, we need to reflect and ask critical questions that provoke change. All our participants expect this deep authenticity. Paired with an opportunity for sustained inquiry, we hope that the week will form your thinking so you can begin to form the thinking of your students.

    Protocols
Protocols are designed to provide structured feedback on our projects or coursework. We introduce and participate in protocols in all our courses to give structured feedback to one another. These protocols will be given to you to use with your students—it’s a lived experience!

    Critical Friends
The course you choose will determine the critical friends you journey with through the Residency week and beyond. These friends will provide feedback and perspective to challenge how you do things. All our critical friends are trained and encouraged to provide warm and cool feedback to grow you as an educator.

    Breakout Sessions
Breakout sessions are designed to give you a new perspective on the week. Sometimes, we need a break to consider other course impact areas. Speakers may discuss assessment, global opportunities, or personal impact stories.

    Celebrations of Learning
The week culminates in a celebration of learning. On our last day together, we showcase the work you complete during residency week. Celebrations are important—they show us how far we have come and encourage our colleagues. It is important that we introduce the support you may need moving forward to your peers and administrators.

    Networking
You will build relationships with your critical friend groups and engage with educators and administrators from all different experiences and backgrounds. As much as this is an opportunity to learn, it is equally an opportunity to connect with fellow educators, administrators and directors. With the rich partnerships developed in the Residency, you will find opportunities to collaborate with others who want to journey through your failures and share in your successes.

    Graduate Level Training
Our partnerships with ICS and Dordt University add rigour to the Residency. We are excited to connect with higher education institutions to help you in your professional careers. These universities are committed to working with you if you want to ladder into a Master’s program. All Residency courses qualify for partial course credit at our partnering universities.
