Is your school community facing the daunting challenge of aging facilities or the urgent need for expansion? Embarking on a capital project can feel overwhelming, but the success of your final build is rooted in the decisions you make long before ground is broken. Join us for a practical primer on navigating the critical pre-design phase. Asher deGroot and Karsten Fast will explore an essential roadmap for project startup—from identifying your mission-aligned “future state” and assembling the right stakeholders, to evaluating the complex trade-offs between renovation, modular, and new construction. Whether you are grappling with budget realities, defining long-term legacy, or simply asking where to begin, this session will provide you with the strategic questions and stewardship-focused framework necessary to turn your school’s vision into a lasting, community-enhancing reality.

We will review the role of school leadership (board and administration) in the mission and vision process. We will examine research from Australia and the US on Christian Post-secondary institutions that have drifted from their founding vision and those that have remained true to their founding vision and mission. We’ll examine the factors that lead to mission drift and the factors that sustain mission fidelity.

Asher is an Architect, builder and innovator with over 18 years of experience throughout BC and beyond, working on educational buildings, industrial spaces, restaurants, multi-residential buildings, churches and farms.
Notable education projects in his portfolio include the Langley Christian School Elementary campus expansion (2023), The King’s University Centre Academic Enrichment Centre, the TRIUMF Centre for outreach on UBC’s campus, and Oregon State University College of Forestry. He has also worked closely as a designer at all stages of design and construction with faith-based groups, from the mixed-use Vancouver First Church of the Nazarene to the modest renovation of Trinity Grace United church and the beautifully simple Meristem Chapel at A Rocha in Surrey.
Asher advocates for highly collaborative design process on all his projects, knowing from experience how critical meaningful input and feedback are to creating successful and beautiful projects.
As the son of two longtime educators in the SCSBC – Asher understands the independent Christian school system, its curriculum, culture and the pressures and constraints faced by independent schools -particularly in the development of capital projects – in a way that few architects do. He brings this unique perspective to his school design work, valuing the many perspectives around the table, including students, teachers, boards, and the communities that financially support these schools.
It also gives him inspiration for how faith and learning can combine to foster a rich and welcoming community.
