Leadership within Christian communities can feel like walking a tightrope of tension between polarized groups. Drawing on research and personal stories, this workshop will give you practical approaches to divisive issues that will help, not hinder, the faith formation of your students.
Angela Bick, Editor-in-Chief, Christian Courier
We will review the role of school leadership (board and administration) in the mission and vision process. We will examine research from Australia and the US on Christian Post-secondary institutions that have drifted from their founding vision and those that have remained true to their founding vision and mission. We’ll examine the factors that lead to mission drift and the factors that sustain mission fidelity.
Dave Loewen, SCSBC Executive Director
This workshop will be an introduction (or review) of the basic principles of effective nonprofit board governance.
Dave Loewen, SCSBC Executive Director
Participants will be invited to consider that AI is not a surprise to God. This session will explore a redemptive framework for AI use and explore how AI presents both challenges and opportunities for education. Participants will also get a sneak peek at the generative AI tool SCSBC is building for its member schools.
Darren Spyksma, SCSBC Associate Executive Director
Who is FISA? What does FISA do? What are the key initiatives for FISA this school year? What did FISA accomplish in the past school year (2024/25)?
Shawn Chisholm, Executive Director, FISA BC
In this session, we will examine and discuss the legal rights, obligations, and risks associated with membership in a school society. We will consider different membership models in school societies and explore some options to help manage associated risks.
Ken Volkenant, Founding Partner, Volkenant Law Group
How can Christian school leaders cultivate belonging across cultures and communities? This workshop invites participants to explore how our leadership takes root in particular places and relationships. Through storytelling, reflection, and discussion, we’ll consider what it means to lead with cultural humility, moving beyond ethnicity to recognize the diverse stories, experiences, and “gardens” that shape our communities. Join us as we learn together how to root deeply, respond faithfully, and nurture with care, in the places God has called us to serve.

In August 2018, Shawn took on the position of Executive Director of the Federation of Independent School Associations in BC, which presently represents over 310 FISA-member independent schools to the government and other provincial stakeholders. Shawn’s primary role and passion is to advocate for choice, fair and equitable funding and recognition for the integral role independent schools play in the BC education system – while safeguarding the independence of schools within government regulations.
Dave passionately believes that Christian education is as relevant and necessary today as ever. It brings him great joy to serve in an organization that seeks to help Christian schools flourish.

He has embraced opportunities to participate in school inspection and policy development work for the BC Ministry of Education in BC and internationally. Dave is an adjunct Trinity Western University faculty member in the Masters of Arts in Leadership program. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Theory and Leadership Studies and is currently studying Theology at Regent College.

Darren’s driving motivation is supporting educators and emerging leaders in creating engaging, empowering learning environments that foster faith formation. In his leadership roles, he seeks to challenge educators to explore ideas that bring schools to a place of continuous improvement within a distinctly Christian framework. Darren is committed to promoting learning built on meaningful relationships, is demanding and rigorous, and engaging and relevant for the learner. He works with schools to intentionally develop a way of being represented in selecting practices, implemented over time, toward a common vision for learning and student wholeness. It is through the creation of learning experiences for students and staff that transformation is possible.
Before joining the staff at SCSBC as an Associate Executive Director and Director of Learning, Darren worked at four schools in various positions, including administration. In two of those schools, he supported a team in shaping middle years programs that are responsive to the developmental needs of adolescents. Darren’s downtime is spent with family and friends, talking about the many reasons why edible landscaping is the future of food security in many parts of the world, including his suburban postage-stamp-sized yard.
Jeremy Tinsley and his family call Vancouver, BC, home, where he serves as Superintendent at Vancouver Christian School. A graduate of Abbotsford Christian School and Dordt University, Jeremy began his leadership journey teaching in Iowa, where he and his wife, Jen, both taught at Christian schools, and later at Kyiv International School in Ukraine. He was blessed to serve for 12 years as vice principal and principal at Duncan Christian School. Jeremy and Jen have three children: two in university and one attending VCS. He finds joy in seeing others thrive, and in journeying with Christian school communities as they equip students to know, love, and serve the Lord.

Tracey brings a varied background of experience to her role with SCSBC schools – as a former Christian school student, parent, board treasurer, and school business manager – which helps her consider issues from different perspectives and serves as a testament to her long-standing commitment to Christian education.
Tracey graduated from the University of BC with a Bachelor of Commerce and began her career in a large public accounting firm, specializing in audits of not-for-profit organizations, local government, and public utilities. She obtained her Chartered Professional Accountant designation in 1993. While taking some time off to raise children, she served on the boards of various not-for-profit organizations, including John Knox Christian School in Burnaby. That involvement led to a 4-year role as the business manager at the school. She joined SCSBC in 2017, where she enjoys connecting with and supporting finance staff in schools around the province while proving to her co-workers that accountants are not boring.
Bryan, along with his wife and two children, lives in the Steveston area where he was born and raised. Now in his tenth year as Head of School at Delta Christian School, his journey in Christian Education began as a grade one student at Richmond Christian School. During his time at Delta Christian, Bryan has helped lay the groundwork for a flourishing community of families, staff, and Board members, all rooted in the school’s mission and vision. Recently, Delta Christian School celebrated its 70th anniversary, marked by the opening of a new, modern facility that reflects the school’s deep commitment to South Delta and the surrounding communities. In recent years, his professional learning has allowed him to develop a deeper understanding of Executive Management in Christian Schools, Educational Leadership, and Applied Theology. He is passionate about building strong teams and effective systems that allow organizations to thrive. Though the leadership journey is not always easy, Bryan has found it to be both life-giving and deeply fulfilling.
